Yes! Two lines of thought spring to mind!

You won't have the hassle of taking the scoot for an MOT, and will be saving a bit of cash every year, especially if you've got a 'collection' ! ( Des in particular!)

Your vintage scooter might not be roadworthy if you're not 'mechanically -minded', and for some scooters, the annual trip to the MOT station is the only time it's actually taken out of the garage!

You can, of course, still take your scooter for a voluntary MOT, if you feel that would give you peace of mind. But as we all know, just having a valid MOT certificate doesn't necessarily mean that the scooter is not going to let you down!

I would say that if you're not 'good with the spanners', a thorough preventative maintenance service undertaken by a reputable professional person, ( somebody who actually knows about old scooters! ) probably just before the start of the scootering season, would be a very good idea, and probably better than just a 'snapshot' of the scooter's roadworthyness at the time of undergoing an MOT!

Just my opinion of course!

Take care and ride safe!

Current Mot's are a waste of time on scoots that average 300 miles a year or less if your lucky
MOT regulations state you can only TEST what you can get to so MOT inspector will not remove side panels to checks engine mounts rear shock etc
so in effect you pay £50.00 to turn lights on and off blow the horn check brakes and tyres and check head and wheel bearings for play
DVLA have a default time to Mot motorcycles so Testing of scoot takes 10 minutes then you have to talk crap with MOT inspector for 20 minutes before he can log in and issue test cert

Bring on May 18 will save £200.00

Ps different scenario for pre 78 cars

I have heard from a reliable source with several contacts within the motor repair industry that apparently, these new rules are still in the discussion stage and haven't yet been approved.

[i]`Currently, vehicles built or first registered before 1960 are already exempt from MoT testing. However, the Department for Transport has now agreed that any vehicle constructed or first registered over 40 years ago will now be exempt from an MoT on a rolling basis, following a successful consultation into reforming the roadworthiness test. The changes will come into effect from 20 May 2018`

If you google `MOT changes from 2018` you will find plenty of postings similar to this, but interestingly I can find nothing from an official source, ie, DVLA or DVSA etc

Thanks Chris!

As you said, very wordy!

Here's the important bit-

DEPARTMENT FOR TRANSPORT

Official Document
September 2017

Exempting Vehicles of Historic Interest
from Roadworthiness Testing
Government Response to Consultation

Exemption from MOT Testing for Vehicles Over 40 Years Old

32.
We will introduce secondary legislation to enact these changes as soon as possible.
The changes will come into effect from 20 May 2018.

Maybe the guys in the trade need to check up on what's happening!

NEVER RATED HIM AS A CAR JOURNALIST WHAT PLANET IS HE FROM PRATT ????????

Former Top Gear presenter Quentin Willson branded the new exemption “insane” and claimed it was “proof that Westminster has no idea what drivers really want or what’s important to them.”

He warned: “We may see a rise in accidents!”

We all know that the insurance companies will win on this one. You will have to have an MOT to lower your premiums in the end.If you are any good at building/ maintaining your bike then you know as much as the MOT man.Sadly lot of people are not that capable. Somebody is going to get hurt or killed over this and the law will be amended .It doesn't hurt to have another pair of eyes to look over what you think is safe.Don't want a row with you Rich, look forward to you coming out with us soon ,but there is still some 1978 dogs about that could be exploited.Sorry about the grammer or the speling but you know what I'm about this time of night.
