Locarno Night

Postby Jim » Tue Mar 11, 2008 8:47 pm

We've finally sorted out the venue for the BMSC Locarno Night! It will take place on the planned date, Saturday 5th April in the function room at-

The Warwick Arms,
Charlton Road,
Kingswood,
Bristol

The evening will kick off at 7.30pm through to midnight.

Entry is free!

Bernie will be our DJ for the night, playing music that would have been heard at the Locarno during '67 to '69- Motown, Reggae, Ska and Top thirty stuff.

This will be a great opportunity to dress up in your favourite sixties Mod outfit, although this isn't compulsary!

So, please come along, bring your friends, non club members very welcome!

See you all there! Cheerz,Jim

*Des did the sorting out on this one, so why not buy him a drink on the night!*

I have to say I am looking forward to doing this night.
It sounds like its going to b an exciting night, with quite a few club members coming along to relive those happy memories.
If anyone coming, has a special tune/tunes they want played on the night, please let me know, so I can make sure I put them in the box. Either post it on here, or email me bernie@lambrotwist.freeserve.co.uk
I have already had requests from Chris and Malcolm, so dont be frightened to get yours in.
See you all there......

This is my list- these are records I can actually remember hearing at the Locarno 40 years ago! ('Tho I can't remember what I did yesterday!) On reflection, some are a bit corny by today's standard of music, but that was what the top thirty was like in those days!

COOL
Aint nothing but a house party- Showstoppers
Knock on wood- Eddie Floyd
Sweet soul music- Arthur Conley
007- Desmond Dekker
Heaven must have sent you- Elgins (my fave)
Respect- Aretha Franklin
When your young and in love- Marvelettes
Take me in your arms and love me- Gladys Knight
Je t'aime- Jane Birkin
Any current Temptations/ Supremes/ Four Tops/ Stevie Wonder

COOL POP
Bend me shape me- Amen Corner
Everlasting love- Love Affair
Night of fear- The Move
Whiter shade of pale- Procul Harem
Any current Who/ Small Faces/ Kinks

NOT SO COOL
Judy in disguise- John Fred
Simon says-1910 Fruitgum Co
Jennifer Eccles- Hollies

There are more, but I need to go and lie down for a bit!

Bernie has said that he has some great Locarno music lined up for us, so we are in for a treat! Well done Bernie and thanx mate for the time and effort you're putting into this!

How's about these, perhaps not exactly Locarno classics, but they might re-create a Quadrophenic moment!

Green Onions- Booker T
Louie Louie- Kingsmen
Wah Watusi- Orlons (?)

(Bernie- if you do play these, I might have to dive off the balcony!)

don't want to worry anyone...............but the biggest selling single of 1967 was "The Last Waltz" by Englebert Humperdink- this kept the Beatles off the number 1 spot..............
