NEWS FROM THE ISLE OF WIGHT!

Postby Steve Holloway » Thu Aug 21, 2008 2:58 pm

Dry and sunny today (Thurs) and the forecast for at least the next two days is good.
Been to Ryde today, few scoots arrived already.
The green opposite The King Lud is fenced off, with a beer tent and stage being erected, which means there is very little space left to park the scoots as is traditional in previous years. Not sure where everyone will congregate now.

Good shout Steve- thanx for the info. As you've said, parking on the green is traditional, and to see all the scoots there is a fantastic site, unique to the IOW. This is going to p*ss off lots of guys big time!

Is this what it is??

<img src="http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r90/jimburnhammod/iw_festival.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket">

So, where are we all gonna meet up/ park up??

Keep us posted mate!!

See ya later,Jim

RIP IOW!

Whilst its "free" (sorry mate can't bring your own drink/ food in here- you have to buy it from the stalls), its destroyed the Soul of the IOW. 99% of the enjoyment of IOW was meeting up on The Green for a chat and take a few pix. Now we have it "comercialised".

Can't see it lasting IMO.

Met up with Des, Mike and Clive today (Fri) at Ryde. Scoots everywhere on the pavements opposite King Lud, but they are allowing Scooter parking within the fenced off area. Entry is free but they are expecting a donation for poppy day!

Local traders are asking scooterists to sign a petition to `give the green back` so of course we did.

Heard some bad news regarding `Yeovil` Bob. On way to IOW today he came off his scoot and is now in hospital. Will try to get more info and update tomorrow

Update on Yeovil Bob:

Spoke to Graham and Gerry last night (in the pub at Sandown) Graham accompanied Bob to Hospital at Salisbury, seems he has 5 broken ribs and cuts and bruising and was staying in at least overnight.
Gerry said the scoot was hardly damaged.

Great day today (Saturday) Met up with Graham, Gerry and Steve at the parts arena at Smallbrook then lost touch as we headed in to Ryde. Thousands of scoots here, roads are chaos. Warm and sunny all day today.

Thank-you Gerry, Steve and Graham for making time to call in to see Bob- as I'm certain you must have been feeling tired after this weekend. Well done to everyone who helped Bob when the accident happened.

Having buddies around to help out at times like this is invaluable, and a true indication of the spirit of friendship that exists within the scootering community.

We all wish Bob all the very best, and we will help in any way we can.

Thanx for keeping us informed, Gerry.

Just been listening to an interesting debate on Isle of Wight radio regarding the rally.

A Ryde town councillor, Dave Knowles, admitted that the council had dropped a major clanger by licencing the `Lazy Afternoon` event that blocked the green. He went on to say that they received an application in May for council permission to stage this event, they understood (wrongly) that the applicants were connected with the scootering fraternity.
During their representation to the council licencing committee, the applicants stated that if Isle of Wight wished to keep the scooterists coming, they needed to do something to attract them. Dave Knowles went on to say that Isle of Wight welcome scooterists, and see the rally as a major highlight on the tourist calendar, not only looked forward to by local traders, but by the majority of island residents also. Which is why, with good intentions, Ryde Town Council licenced the event. He now concedes that they were, in his words `duped` by the applicants. He says that the council were inundated with complaints, not only from scooterists, but also from local residents and traders. He now realises how important it is for the green to be kept open and restriction free for scooterists to come and go with relative ease, and promised that he for one, would definitely oppose any future applications to fence off the green, and whilst he couldn`t speak for his fellow councillors felt confident that they would follow suit given the fallout following the weekend.

So there we have it, looks like we will get our green back next year!

No problem. It would be good to spread the news.

Rest assured, I was careful to post an accurate account of what was said on the programme, so there should be no comebacks.
