60's style Jimmy megaphone exhausts?

Postby Adam_Mod4Life » Thu Feb 12, 2009 12:30 pm

A little help from the experts please lads.. :puzzled:

Managed to find a Jimmy exhaust on "Tinternet" (at last :-D ) and it looks great but having just scoured through the Members section ofn your old site, the one on Mike Pick's blue and white SX looks better quality than the one I’ve seen. :cry:

Can one of you chaps recommend anywhere else other than WSP that sells Jimmy megaphone exhausts so that I can shop around a little. I don't want to shell out all that wedge only to find a better one a few weeks later.

I know that they sound the nuts but restrict the performance by about 5mph, but has anyone got any other pros or cons that they could share.

There is also an interesting thread on the LCGB form: http://forums.lcgb.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtop ... 29dccae201

Anyone know what he's done here?

Cheers guys :wave: [/img]

The quality of remade "Outrigger" exhausts can be variable- the one on Mike Picks bike is good quality but I'm unsure where he got it from as its probably well over 10 years old now.

Might be worth having a word with Jim Burnham as he's fitted one fairly recently and its a good one.

Yes you will lose some performance- the one on the LCGB site has been modded at the front to accept a 42mm downpipe which Scooter Loopy John recons helps

The sound is orgasmic though!!

Can be problems with baffles coming loose and the weld going where the pipe enters the box

remade ones are ok , just be aware they are a dog to fit, issues with rear board, rear crash bars and kickstart, and beware the baffles do fall out causing a alarming speed loss without warning :roll: :roll: :roll: but in return you do get the sound of the 60s ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-) which makes up for it :whistle: :whistle: :whistle: honest won`t use anything else

Yeah Gerry- you are right about them being dogs to fit! You may have to carefully bend the kickstart out a bit- Steve H had to do this- heat up the kickstart and use a stong vice to hold it- this procedure may cause the loss of a bit of chrome. Also watch out for the bracket that secures the megaphone part to the lower suspension bolt- this bracket tends to just hit the bottom of the sidepanel when going over bumps, specially if you're riding two up. If you have the clip on type, there is a chance that the panel might pop off when hit by the bracket, not a very nice experience!

The design of these exhausts does tend to make them prone to the welds breaking, as Chris mentioned. Mike Picks exhaust is an original, and I know he has had a few bits re- welded.

Allegedly you do lose a bit off your performance, but I think the look and sound of them makes up for that, and after all, mod scoots aren't really about speed, with all the heavy chomey bits weighing it down.

Colin mentioned the price of re-mades, but that's the price they've always been. From what I've seen, these exhausts are made in batches and are not around at all times, so I would advise buying one if they're available at the mo. Although they are an acceptable copy, the remades are not quite as good as the originals, but the ones from the 60's rarely come up for sale!

Good luck with fitting it, I'd allow yourself a good few hours to fit it!

Just to add my bit:

As Jim mentioned, I found after fitting the Mega` that it fouled the kickstart. Clamp it in a vice, heat it gently, slide a strong hollow bar over it and bend it out slightly (about 1/2inch) If done carefully the chrome should be OK.
If you have rear crashbars the bottom bracket will also require `remodelling` in the vice.
One last tip: Check the stand goes back up properly before finally tightening everything (mine didn`t)

As Jim said, allow a good few of hours for the job!

Yep, my standard kickstart used to scrape the pipe coming out of the exhaust box, but I've now got an SX200 kickstart fitted, and as you said Gerry, they are longer, and they have an extra little bend in the end of 'em which clears the 'Jimmy' nicely. I'm sure I can remember talking to the guy behind the counter at King's way way back in '68 (yes, it is a bit sad remembering stuff like this!) about these outrigger exhausts, and I vaguely remember him saying that they were designed to only fit on SX 200's, because of the shape of the kickstart, and that you might have a bit of a job fitting it on another model Lambretta.(He was right about that bit!)

Trouble is, genuine SX 200 kickstarts are as rare as a mod scooter in a WSC rideout! Anyway, here's a pic of Gary's, with an extra Red Bull baffle!-

Just feeling a bit bored this afternoon, so dragged the scoot out of the garage to take some pics to show how little space there is between the kickstart, rear crashbar bracket, running board and megaphone exhaust.

<img src="http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r90/jimburnhammod/PICT2166.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket">
Here you can see how the crashbar bracket has been reshaped to go underneath the pipe.

<img src="http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r90/jimburnhammod/PICT2174.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket">
Just to show the difference between SX200 kickstart (fitted) and standard kickstart.(No, I didn't use the oil!)

<img src="http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r90/jimburnhammod/PICT2164.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket">
You can see here how the crashbar bracket took the paint off the pipe before I altered it, and how nicely the kickstart misses the pipe.

<img src="http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r90/jimburnhammod/PICT2165.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket">
Don't forget that if you've got florrie bars, you might have to move them up a bit.

<img src="http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r90/jimburnhammod/PICT2160.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket">
And with the choke out, you can blow smoke rings!

I guess all non standard exhausts can be a bit of a pain to fit. Hope these pics have been a help if you're thinking of fitting a 'Jimmy'.It's all part of the fun of having a modded up scoot!
