Historic Vehicle Road Tax

Saw this on the Friday Club website, and the more people know about it, the better.

It's an e- petition to get the historic vehicle cut off point up dated and resume a rolling status, so that whenever a vehicle reaches a certain age, it becomes historic, and therefore the road tax is free.

Here's a snippet from Wikipedia-

Vehicles constructed before 1 January 1973 are eligible for a free vehicle licence under "historic vehicle" legislation. This is due to the age of the vehicle and a presumption of limited mileage. Initially this was a rolling exemption applied to any vehicles over 25 years old, however the cutoff date was frozen in 1997. The change to "pre-1973" was unpopular in the classic motoring press, and a number of classic car clubs are campaigning for a change back to the previous system. In 2006 there were 307,407 vehicles in this category.

Here's the link to the petition- 100,000 signatures are required for it to be discussed in parliament.

I reckon it's well worth signing!

Of course, there are a few realities to consider-

1- If the petition does reach it's target of 100,000 signatures, it's not gauranteed that this issue will be debated in parliament, but will be 'considered' for discussion.

2- Why are they asking for it to be 30 years? I thought it was all about vehicles over 25 years old!

3- Does anybody honestly think in these 'belt tightening' times, that this government is going to even consider losing out on a huge slice of revenue from road fund taxes!

But I guess if we don't try, we will never know!

Chris, as a British Historian, I must point out that Great Britain was a derivative of 'Groat Britain' after the monetary units used in bygone days. Great was only used later to foil our enemies. Tis the same as United Kingdom when we have a queen. No wonder we are popular abroad :grrr: :grrr: :grrr:
