Hi

New to the club, hope this is the correct way to introduce myself.

More than forty years have passed since I last owned a scooter

SX150 reg FFB 87F. I know she's no longer around, but I can still see her in my minds eye, red and white like my favourite football team.

So I've just purchased my next scooter and it needs some (a lot) of restoration.

Three years ago while on holiday in Greece I was wandering around the back streets of a small village when I came across a very badly painted LI150.

The owner was a carpenter by trade and through his son who spoke good english I opened negotiations, he flatly refused to sell, and I thought that was that.

This year I went back to the same place, the scooter was still there, the old guy had sadly died the year before, and his son who had inherited everything (as Greek sons do) was willing to do business....now she's mine, all mine.

If possible I'm hoping to ask lots of questions to help with the restoration, if that's not OK please let me know. :-D

Hi Paul, welcome to the club! Interesting story, and yeah, feel free to ask any questions- we'd be happy to help in any way!

Any pics of the scoot? It's always interesting to watch progress on a scooter restoration!

Good luck with it all!

Jim.

I'll be paying you a visit when I get back for sure.

Guys

Thanks for the welcoming words.

You may all regret the ask away comment! I can be a persistent little bugger ;-)

I've done a bit of research and would be interested in your comments

The frame number begins 68, the engine number begins 68, they are about 400 numbers apart, would this point to them both being manufactured in 1963? in Italy?

There is (I think) a chrome ring at the top of the legshields, although its been painted over, which makes it an early S3?

The speedometer has been removed and the headlamp surround is hexagonal with 4 screws holding it in place, from what I've read this type was fitted on Li Specials, could it have come out of the factory with this headlamp on it?

The seat has the name Giuliari stamped on the front hinge where it is bolted to the frame, again could this have been fitted in the factory, or is it a later addition?

My plan is to restore to as near factory spec as possible, so any comments would be welcome.

LI3 150 frames starting "68...." do indicate a 1963 build from Milan. As the engine number is so close to the frame number, it would appear genuine and Italian. The seat with "Guiliari" stamped on the front hinge, also indicate an early S3 seat as fitted in the factory- although most (not all) ordinary LI150's had single seats as standard.

What is the IGM number? (near to the frame number)

The headset is wrong, and is, as stated, a "Special" type headset- Ordinary S3 LI150's had a plain round one- yours has been replaced some time.

The "Chrome ring" is correct for the year (these were dropped in May 1965)

Good Luck

Chris

looks pretty original, headset will not be cheap, but dont be tempted with indian, they fit bad, are you gonna keep it 150 or are you going bigger?? 150s are loverly , but are just a little bit slow

Gerry / Chris

Thanks for the info

If a 150 is slow that's gonna suit me fine :-D

I'd like to keep the scooter as original as possible, looks like I'm going to have to buy a new headset, presumably there would be a market for the one I've got, to offset the cost of the one I need.

Another one of those questions, is there a website where I can find the specification for this scooter?

By frame or engine number?

If they were never originally fitted with the headset I've got on mine, I'd just like to be able to prove it :puzzled:
