Rear wheel and hub side play

Postby nickwill » Mon Aug 13, 2012 8:59 pm

Evening all.

Not being in possession of a Lambretta workshop manual, I'd be grateful if someone could let me know how much side play is normal for the rear wheel and hub of a lammie.
I'm not talking about wobbly hubs here, just with the wheel off the ground and the scoot in gear, how much should the wheel be able to move round before taking up any movement in the transmission?.

Answers on a postcard, or I'll mention it at the Bike Show this weekend.

Nick- the original Work Shop Manual stated that "some movement is permitted". Indeed, I believe there is some account built in to allow for expansion of the bearing- if there is no movement then as the hub bearing gets hot and expands.........

Generally, all Lambretta rear hubs I have come across have a minute amount of play which can be felt at the edge of the wheel when rocked- as long as this is not excessive then you should be OK.

Nick

sorry- just read your post again.

Are you talking side to side play or transmission "backlash"

Chris,

I was indeed meaning transmission backlash - even though I didn't know the correct terminology.

I don't have play in the hub bearings, it's just with the bike on the jack and in first gear, I was surprised at the amount the wheel would turn before taking up slack in the transmission. It may well be normal, but not sure what normal actually is !!

Put it this way - if it was on a car I would be thinking 'drive shafts are shot away'. There may well be something in Lambretta drive train that causes this, but not sure what, or how much slack is normal.

as the lad once said in some film or other...........

"Yeah? What's normal then??......"

There is a lot of backlash in the system, which is perfectly normal- stop worrying.

Thanks Chris.

Thought that might be the case, but wanted to be sure. Seems an odd thing though, as slack in the transmission means every time drive is taken up or the throttle is shut off and the bike goes into overrun there must be an impact on the gearbox, chain, hub spindle and sprockets, but if its the design, that's all I need to know. I'll go back to dreaming of Olympic closing ceremonies and stuff.
