The end of vintage scooter riding?

I see that central London has been declared an Ultra Low Emision Zone!

Drivers of some of the oldest and most polluting vehicles will be forced to pay up to £24 a day when driving in central London under plans unveiled by London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

He has published proposals to expand the introduction of an Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in the capital.

Cars, vans and motorcycles which do not meet emission standards would pay £12.50 per day on top of the existing £11.50 congestion charge, bringing their total fees to £24.

Is it only a matter of time before other cities and town centres follow suit?

Could be the end of pootling around on yer vintage scoot into the city centre to meet up with your pals for a cuppa and a chin wag!

Two strokes get a lot of bad press as far as the 'fresh Air' brigade goes! Can you imagine how our old scoots would measure in an exhaust / smoke /pollution test! They just would not pass for sure!

I had seen some of the publicity regarding penalties for high-emission vehicles, and there seems to be a move against diesels more than petrol-engined vehicles, on the basis that diesel exhaust particles are known to cause cancer as well as affecting people with respiratory problems. 2 strokes emit a lot of smoke but the question is whether or not the exhaust fumes are actually harmful. I'm hoping that will be the basis for the bans or penalty charges rather than the fact that scooters produce a lot of smoke. Guess it remains to be seen. Theres also the fact that most vintage car and bike/scooter owners probably do a tenth of the mileage done by drivers of modern vehicles, and an even smaller fraction of the miles done by taxis and buses, so hopefully some form of common sense will prevail. Or maybe not !!
